Hames Marina was founded in 1961 by Clifton Curtis "CC" Hames, just after Smith Lake was flooded. The story goes that the acres of land (both above and below water) which is now known as Hames Marina—came into the family's possession by trading for an 'old 51 Chevy. That may be hog-wash, but if it's true it may be the best milleage anyone's gotten out of a Chevy since!
The Marina has been host to countless families, fisherman and fun-seekers looking to get away from big city life and enjoy the calm, clear and deep waters of Lewis Smith Lake. With over 500 miles of beautiful shoreline on the 21,200 acre lake-- it's easy to understand why they visited. As a matter of fact—the Alabama record spotted bass came from Smith Lake on March 18, 1978. The eight-pound, fifteen-ounce fish was caught by Phillip C. Terry of Decatur—Kinda makes you wanna get your rod and reel out don't it?
